Week 1

Sep-10

Skyland Varsity:  Somerville 16 @ Central 18

Game Summary:

Somerville jumped out to a fast start with 2 touchdowns on their first two possessions of the game.  The first on a 7 play drive highlighted by a 50 yd. run down to the 3-yd. line by #6 Van Ness on a wing sweep.     After a quick 3 and out, Somerville scored again on a quick strike with a 81 yd TD run on the 1st play on their second series.   After just about half way through the 1st quarter they had a 14-0 lead.  After some back and forth, the SBU Jr Pioneers were driving again early n the second quarter and drove all the way inside the 10 yard line.  They had 1st and goal from the 7, but were stopped at the 1 yard line on a 4 & 1 run.   However, on the very next play, the Central QB was sacked for a loss in the endzone and Somerville tacked on a safety for a 16-0 lead.

Central started their comeback with a long drive featuring multiple backs that culminated in a 6yd TD run to close the gap to 16-6 before halftime.   The 3rd quarter featured several punts and interceptions by both teams stopping drives.   Eventually, Central was able to sustain a drive midway through the 4th quarters and even tally punched it in from the 2 with about 4 1/2 minutes to play in the game and close it to a 1 score game.    Somerville took over inside their 30 after the KO and faced a 3 and 25 after a big sack but able to gain 28 yards on a well-executed RB screen, staggering the hopes of the central Defense.   Under 2 minutes remained as Central started using their timeouts and eventually held on a 4 and 8 to get the ball back with about 1:40 left.   Central ran 2 runs in a no-huddle mode to get a 1st down and then from their own 32, with under a minute left, Central connected on a long pass down the visitor’s sideline at around the Somerville 40 and the receiver sprinted the rest of the way into the end zone for a go ahead TD.    The game ended after the KO and a few plays by Somerville around their own 30.
