GNJAYF 2018 Week 5 Game of the Week

9U Peewee Delaware Division matchup:

Hillsborough Jr Raiders (13) at North Hunterdon Jr Lions (27)

The moisture in the air turned to a fine mist of steady rain at Memorial Park in Lebanon Twp. on Saturday morning October 6.   The North Hunterdon Junior Lions hosted the Hillsboro Junior Raiders in a match that would prove to be a hard fought victory for the home team; and while the grass was wet, the players’ spirits did not dampen.

The Jr Lions opened the scoring in the first quarter on their first offensive series with a 40 yard touchdown scamper by #1 Sam Hanson.    The extra point was good as Hanson followed his TD with a plunge into the end zone for the PAT and gave the Jr Lions a 7-0 edge.

The Jr Raiders would answer with a scoring drive of their own that would end with 3 yard run by the #15 Owen Miller behind the right side of his offensive line.   The point after attempt was no good and Hillsboro trailed by one, 7-6, at the end of the first quarter.   Miller finished the day with 65 yds rushing behind the great blocking of  #24 Zac Freling, #12 Tommy McNicholas, and #44 Joandel Nebot-Toro.

The second quarter saw quarterback #4 Chase Rochelle with a pitch right to running back #10 RJ Sainte-Rose who use some nice moves to get around the corner and then took it down the sideline for 42 yard TD run.   Hanson followed the score with his 2nd PAT run of the day on a well-executed counter giving the Jr. Lions a well-earned 14-6 lead.

The Jr Raiders starting moving the ball down the field on thier next series looking for the tying score but #5 Stephen Prohidney made an outstanding play to intercept a Jr. Raider pass and returned it to the 5 yard line setting up the Jr. Lions 1st and goal.  That tackle proved important.   Jr Raiders defense was led all day by #17 Chase Shepler, who had 5 tackles on the day along with #72 Reece Deroner who had 3 tackles and was a disruptive force at DT.    The Jr Raiders defense stood strong and denied the Jr Lions from punching it in and engineered a great goal line stand as the first half expired.

Sainte-Rose would score again on a nice 9 yard run early in the third quarter and Hanson made it a PAT hat-trick with his 3rd PAT run as the Jr Lions increased their lead to 21-6.  But a resilient Hillsboro team answered immediately, with a long drive with multiple 1st downs culminating in a 7 yd TD run by #33 Conor Albert who had 40 rushing yards on the day.  A successful PAT Run by Miller brought the score to 21-13 and closed the gap between the teams.

While the game still hung in the balance, the two squads traded several drives, fighting for field position.   The Jr Raiders defense was a force, punctuated by great tackling by  Albert, Freling, and #20 Logan Redziniak who each had multiple tackles.   In the end,  the North team would wear down their Jr Raiders opponents behind the great blocking on the offensive linemen:   #50 Ronin Chauhan, #56 Jack Hornby, #57 Graeme Arnold, #3 Kellan Piasecki and #9 Evan Santoiemma   Midway through the fourth quarter Sainte-Rose had a powerful run of 20 yards up the middle, setting up the Jr. Lions in the Jr. Raiders’ one yard line.  On the ensuing play, QB Rochelle threw his first touchdown pass of the season to Hanson who skillfully plucked it out of the air among a swarm of Jr Raider defenders.   The extra point attempt was denied by a good defensive effort and the Jr. Lions were on top, 27-13.

As time expired on the clock, the North Hunterdon Jr. Lions came away with a hard fought victory and the appreciation of the fans for the effort and sportsmanship of both team was evident in the cheers and applause the filled the stadium.
